Chapter 15: New Terms

The floor lasted about a minute.

He laid out the quilt in the living room, folded the best cushion into a pillow, and sat down on the rug with his back against the split sofa.

I stood in the kitchen with my arms crossed.

He looked up at me and said, "I'll be fine here."

"You're on the floor."

"You said the floor." he said.

"I said the floor an hour ago. That was an hour ago." I said.

"Tamar, I don't think..."

"Stop thinking. You're bad at it."

I took the graph paper he had given me, and a pencil, and sat cross-legged on the rug facing him.

He watched me with a worried look.

I wrote on the top sheet in block capitals.

NEW TERMS.

"We broke the old ones," I said. "All four. One, twelve months. Broken, because I'm not going to walk away in twelve months, and I think you know it. Two, no questions about the past. Broken by Noreen. Three, no lying. Broken by you."

"Yes."

"Four. Nobody else in the bed." I said.

"Unbroken." he said.

"Mine too."

I looked at the paper.

"Here's the only rule," I said, and wrote it. "Say the true thing the day you know it."

He read it upside down.

"That's all?"

"That's all." I said.

"It's harder than the other four." he said.

"Good."

I tore the sheet in half and gave him the half with the rule.
