Chapter 22: The Quad
The deputy had brought my notebooks back on Tuesday, in a clear evidence bag with a form to sign.
They had been in Roland's office safe, under the deed to the lake house.
My mother's wedding ring had been in the same safe.
It was a plain gold band, worn thin on one side, wrapped in a handkerchief that smelled of motor oil.
I'd spent three days not knowing what to do with it.
I knew now.
At noon on Saturday, the first week of December, the quad was gray and cold and half empty, the maples bare, the folding chairs long gone.
The only thing left of Founders Day was the stone steps in front of Haverly Hall.
I stood on the second step in my gray cardigan with a wool coat over it.
The locket lay against my collarbone.
My mother's ring was in my coat pocket, wrapped in tissue, and my hands were not steady.
"Breathe," said Cleo, who had insisted on coming.
"I am breathing."
"You're doing a thing with your jaw." Cleo said.
"It's my face." I said.
"It's a very nervous face."
