Chapter 5: Sixty Days

My father and Russell came to dinner on the Tuesday after the wedding.

Nobody had asked them.

The housekeeper set two extra places without being told, and Cormick let her.

"Family dinner," Davis said warmly, kissing the air beside my cheek. "We should have done this the day you were married."

"You were at the wedding," I said.

"Not at the table."

He took the seat at Cormick's right hand without being shown to it.

Russell sat across from me and looked at my wedding ring for a long moment.

"Small," he said.

"It's mine."

"Of course it is."

The soup came. Davis talked about the weather, the harbor, and a new freight contract in Rotterdam.

He did not touch the soup.

Cormick ate steadily and said almost nothing.

When the plates were cleared, Davis folded his napkin into a neat square and set it beside his glass.

"Cormick, I'll be honest with you. The firm is tight this quarter."

"I know the figures."

"The note on the fifteenth. Nine million." Davis spread his hands. "A man with your family history understands that these things take time. I'd like another year."

"No," said Cormick.

My father's smile held.

"We're family now."

"We were family on Friday. The note was due on the fifteenth before that."

"Six months, then."

"No."

"Cormick," Russell said. The pleasant voice had come back. "Be reasonable. We gave you our sister."

I put my spoon down.
