Chapter 6: Power Cut

The storm took the power out at nine that Thursday.

I was in the study when the lamps died, sitting on the leather sofa with the print shop's quarterly accounts on my knees.

The housekeeper came with candles, left them on the mantel, and went to bed.

Cormick came in a minute later with a flashlight and a blanket over his arm.

"The generator is being difficult," he said. "It will take an hour."

"I'm fine."

"Your hands are cold again."

"My hands are always cold."

"I noticed."

He said it plainly. He sat down at the far end of the sofa and put the blanket across both of us without being asked.

The fire hissed. Rain hit the window in long sheets.

For a while we read by candlelight, he with a contract and I with my columns.

I did not read a single line.

I was thinking about his forearm, resting on the sofa arm six inches from my hip. The sleeve was rolled to the elbow, and I could see the line where the tendons moved when he turned a page.

I looked down at my numbers.

"Eden."

"Hm?"

"Your feet are on my thigh."

I looked down.

They were.

At some point I had curled up and tucked both feet under the blanket, and they had landed against the side of his leg. My socks were damp from the hall.

I started to pull them back.

"Leave them," Cormick said.

His voice came out lower than before.
