Chapter 19: The Airstrip
Mara's POV
The airstrip behind the Burnt Fork feed store was a strip of cracked asphalt and a windsock.
We got there at four in the morning, with the sheriff's cruiser parked dark behind the grain silo and Janet's car behind that.
A small white plane sat at the end of the runway with its door open.
The sky in the east had just started to gray.
"She'll come by road," Jonas said.
"She'll come by taxi," I said. "She'd never drive herself."
At ten past five a taxi turned off the highway with its headlights on.
My mother stepped out of it in the cream cashmere coat.
She had a leather bag in one hand and a small suitcase in the other.
She walked toward the plane without hurrying.
A man in a pilot's jacket climbed down from the cockpit to meet her.
He was soft and gray and nervous, and he took her suitcase.
"Mrs. Eckhart," he said. "We should go. I don't like the look of the road."
"Nobody is looking at the road," my mother said. "Load it."
I stepped out from behind the silo.
I did it on my feet, with no cane, with Jonas one pace behind me and my hand on nothing.
"Hello, Mother," I said.
She stopped.
The bag slid an inch in her hand, and she caught it.
The pilot looked from her to me and put the suitcase down on the asphalt.
"You walked here," my mother said.
"I walked from the silo."
"You shouldn't be able to."
"I know," I said. "You paid good money to make sure."
The sheriff came out of the dark on my left with two deputies, and Janet on my right with her sling, and behind them, one by one, the night shift from the mill.
They had come in their work boots, and none of them had been called.
My mother looked at the men.
She looked at them for a long time, and when she turned back to me her face was smooth.
