Chapter 10: Gumbo
"You said don't touch it again," I said.
"Again."
I was still in his lap, with his hand on the small of my back and my hair coming down.
"I misspoke," Seb said.
"You did not."
He was quiet for a moment.
The chains of the swing creaked once.
"I've stood in that office twice," he said.
"In June, and in August.
"The first time your father showed me a budget, and the second time he locked the desk before I got near it.
"I know about the drawer because I watched him lock it.
"I'd have told you.
"I didn't want you in that room alone."
It was a good, plain, soldier's answer, and I believed three quarters of it.
I did not say which three quarters.
I climbed off his lap and found my shirt.
"Take me somewhere," I said.
"Somewhere that isn't here, and isn't the parish, and isn't my father's name.
"I want to see something that's yours."
He looked at me for a long time on the dark swing.
"All right," he said.
On Sunday he drove me down to the bayou.
It was an old unpaved landing past the last farm on the road, a long bank under live oaks with Spanish moss hanging in gray hanks to the water.
