Chapter 16: Not Your Son
"No," Idris said.
Odile stopped with her hands half out.
"Idris, my love, you don't understand. You are our blood. You belong at the head of that table."
"I sat at the end of that table for twenty years," he said. "Nobody passed me the bread."
His voice carried to the back of the hall.
He had not meant it to.
"You told me I was a mistake," he said. "You told me I had nothing to lose."
Odile's mouth opened.
"You put a contract next to my soup and said Marius had a fitting at nine."
"We did not know," said Odile.
"You knew I was not like you. You knew at sixteen, when the test came back flat."
He looked at her steadily.
"You looked at your son and decided it was easier to be ashamed of him."
Somebody on the benches drew a hard breath.
Odile's face crumpled.
"Mother," Idris said, and it was not unkind. "I am not your son. Not the way you mean it."
He turned his hand over on the brass.
"I am Idris, and I am married, and I am not coming home."
