Chapter 17: The Marshal Walks Out
The councillor read the dispatch aloud, and by the second line half the benches were on their feet.
Kesh Station had fallen in six hours.
The Skarn Queen had come back out of the dark with two thousand of her swarm.
The border fleet had broken against her.
The fleet's frames could not hurt her now.
The wound the Marshal had given her two years ago was healed, and she had grown a new shell.
"There is one pilot in the Empire graded to face her," the councillor said.
Every head in the round hall turned to the front row.
"Marshal-General Korrigan, the Council orders you to the line."
"Orders him?" Idris said, loudly. "He can't fly."
"The Marshal has a frame," said the councillor.
"The Marshal has a core with a crack down the middle."
"Then the Marshal will take the line anyway," the councillor said, not unkindly. "We will find out how long it holds."
