Chapter 24: The Wedding at Tarn
The great hall of Korrigan Keep had not held a living crowd in forty years.
On the day of the wedding it held four hundred.
The Council sat on the left in grey and silver, and the Healers' Hall on the right in white.
Between them ran an aisle of black stone with a fire at each end.
Idris stood at the top of it in a coat that fit.
It was the first coat he had ever owned that did.
Marius had picked the cloth, and had cried over the sleeves, and had been told to stop crying on the silk.
Dain stood across the hearth in dress blacks with a gold cord on the shoulder.
The cord was new.
So was the ring, a plain band he had asked the cook to help him choose.
The wolf sat between them with a velvet cushion on its head, looking resigned.
At the left hand of Idris's place, at the long table, sat two people in their best clothes.
Odile had been crying since the gate.
Edric sat very straight with his hands flat on the cloth.
Nobody had told either of them what to expect, except that there would be bread.
The Hall Master officiated.
She was seventy and had refused a ceremonial robe, and she held the vows on the back of an ink-stained card.
"The consort has asked to speak first," she announced.
