They Thought I Failed—Until I Turned Down Harvard novel · Chapter 13 of 24
Chapter 13: Awards Night
Flynn was standing in Aunt Jo's driveway at 5:40 with a duffel and a tie that was already crooked.
"You flew," I said.
"I said I would."
"I thought you might have a test."
"I have two. I'm taking them on the plane back."
Jo came out onto the porch with a spatula and looked him over, the way she looks at a chart.
"So you're the log truck."
"My dad's the log truck. I'm just the mechanical engineer."
"Can you carry a laptop without dropping it?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Then you run the screen."
I handed him the laptop, and he held it against his chest with both arms.
On it were the version history, the scans of Jo's sign-in sheets, and the voice memo from the porch.
"The tech cart is at the back of the gym," I said. "The boy who runs it owes me a lab."
"What do I wait for?"
"The principal's voice. Then you'll know."
Westport High's gym held six hundred folding chairs that night, and every one of them was full.
