Chapter 16: Porch Step
I sat down on the step next to her.
I left a foot of concrete between us.
Behind me the screen door opened, and Flynn set a gray sweatshirt in my lap without a word.
It was his, and it smelled like laundry soap and airplane.
He went back inside.
Through the window I could hear Jo not washing dishes, loudly.
"Seven," Camille said.
She was looking at her canvas shoes.
"Seven houses before yours. The first one let me keep my own towel. The fifth one locked the fridge."
"I didn't know it was seven."
"You didn't ask. Nobody does after the first year. They want the sad story to be finished."
She picked at a thread on her sweatshirt.
"When I was twelve, my caseworker drove me to your house, and she told me in the car, 'This is a good one, Camille. Don't make it a short one.'"
"You made it six years."
"I made my bed. I made your mother laugh. I learned what your father likes on his toast." Her mouth twisted. "I was never sure I was allowed to have a bad day."
