Chapter 24: The Tiny Scoop

The old woman would not sell the bakery rink to the Brescias.

She said so in the first minute, in her coat and her house slippers, with her arms crossed.

"I sell to the girl," she said. "Only to the girl."

My father stood by the door with the black card in his hand and said nothing.

He had promised me that.

"Then I'm the girl," I said.

She looked me up and down, and then she nodded toward the counter where the ovens used to be.

"The price is what it cost me to buy it in 1989," she said. "Not one dollar more."

It was less than my father's bonus for a single preseason game.

I laughed, and then I had to hold the counter, because I was crying again.

"Mr. Brescia," the old woman said, without turning her head. "You may run your card."

He crossed the room slowly.

He ran it once, and the machine printed a receipt, and he put the card back in my hand.

"That's what you wanted?" he said.

"That's it."

"It doesn't seem like enough."

"It's a rink," I said. "It's everything."

The old woman went behind the counter and came back with something small in her fist.

She opened her fingers.

It was a tiny steel scoop, dented and bright, the kind a baker uses for sugar.

"It came with the ovens," she said. "Your mother bought the first cone of ice cream with it, from the cart outside, the day she brought you here."

I stared at her.

"You knew her?"

"She paid for your first skates with cash and made me swear to say nothing."

She put the scoop in my palm and closed my fingers over it.

"Now you say whatever you like."

The next morning we had breakfast on the back patio in Brookline, beside the koi pond.
