Chapter 12: The Apron Thief

I didn't follow the silk down the hall.

I stood in the laundry with my last apron in my hands and let my wolf settle.

Then I went and woke up Kitto.

He was asleep on the couch in the great room with his healing hands held up on a cushion.

"She's wearing my aprons," I said. "Under the gown, or on it. She's keeping my smell on her."

He sat up and blinked at me.

"For the Rite."

"For the Rite."

"So the wolf walks to her again." He rubbed his face with the backs of his wrists. "That's disgusting. That's actually kind of smart. I hate that it's smart."

"Do you still have your moth cloth?"

His eyes slowly lit up.

Kitto rubs cedar oil into a square of old flannel and lays it on the wool bolts to keep the moths off.

Every wolf in the pack sneezes when he walks past, and he thinks it's funny.

"Oh," he said. "Oh, Wenna. You beautiful, spiteful witch."

"You said that already."

"It's still true."

I sewed the apron that night by the fire, after the house was asleep.

New canvas, cut to the old pattern. My chalk on the pocket. My thread. My hands on every inch, so it would smell like me.

Between the canvas and the lining, I stitched in a square of Kitto's moth cloth, soaked in cedar oil.

Like my initials in a bodice seam.

I hung it on the drying rack in the laundry with the last one.

In the morning, the new apron was gone.

Three days later was the pack supper, the last one before the Rite.

The union hall was full again, with long tables down the middle and pasties and saffron buns on every one.

We had one hundred and twelve robes finished.

Eight days left.
