Chapter 4: Twenty-Two Weeks

I went down to the ER with a bandaged hand and every reason to turn around.

I am a nurse.

That is the whole explanation, and it is the only one I have ever been able to give.

Carlton was in the waiting room with his sleeves pushed up and his eyes swollen.

He stood when he saw me and took one step forward and stopped.

"Thank you," he said. "I didn't know who else to..."

"Where is she?"

"Bay four. They said twenty-two weeks. She started spotting at the table after you left."

"After I left."

"Claire, don't."

I went past him.

The charge nurse at the ER desk was someone I'd trained with, and she looked at my badge and then at my face and slid a pass across the counter without a word.

Bay four had a curtain half drawn.

Jessa lay on the bed with a monitor strap around her stomach and a tablet beside her showing a small, fast heartbeat.

She had taken off the pink dress, and her gray eyes were red.

The doctor was writing on a clipboard.

"A small bleed from the cervix," he told her. "The baby looks fine. We'll keep you overnight, and you stay off your feet for a week."

Jessa let out a long shaking breath and put both hands on her stomach.

The doctor left.

I stood at the foot of the bed and didn't know what to do with my face.

"You came," Jessa said.

"My husband asked."

"He's not my..." She stopped. "He's not anything. He's married to you."

"I noticed."

She looked at my bandaged palm.

"Did I do that?"

"The setting on the pendant did that. I held it too hard."
