Chapter 15: Welcome Home, Dad
I did not think.
I slid the gray phone across the carpet into my mother's robe pocket, and her hand closed over it.
My father stepped into the room.
His eyes went to Perry's bare ribs, and the bloody cloth, and the lamp.
"Rhett has had a fall," he said to nobody. "He is in the study, and the housekeeper is calling the doctor. Perry, you will tell the guests you tripped on the stairs."
"Yes, Dad," Perry said.
I hated how fast he said it.
My father turned to my mother.
"And you will sit on my right tomorrow, in the green dress, and you will smile."
"Yes, Eldon."
He looked at me last.
"Friday," he said gently. "Seven o'clock."
He left, and the lock turned from the outside.
Friday came.
At seven the ballroom held eighty people in black tie and silk, a string quartet, three cameras and a long table white with candles.
My father stood at the head of it with a glass in his hand.
I sat on his left, in a green dress someone had chosen for me, with my braid pinned up.
Rhett sat across from me.
His jaw was taped and swollen, and he stared at me the whole time.
Perry sat at the far end, as far from my father as the table allowed.
My grandmother's wheelchair had been pushed against the wall by the windows.
Her lawyer stood behind her in a gray suit, with a leather briefcase at his feet.
She gave me a nod so small nobody else saw it.
My mother sat on my father's right with her hand in her purse.
