Chapter 13: The Apology
The Ryu Foundation held its autumn lunch in a glass hall on the river, with eighty guests at round tables and a wide screen behind the lectern.
Ye-rin sat at the head table in a dark green dress that Seo-jun had not paid for.
She had bought it herself with the first of her mother's back pay.
Madam Gu sat three chairs to her left in pearl grey, and she had not spoken to Ye-rin since the tea room.
Da-hee sat beside her mother with a fixed smile.
Her fiance had not come.
The chairman was last to arrive, leaning on the cane he did not need, and a hush followed him across the floor.
His eyes found Ye-rin's and then, for a moment, Seo-jun's.
Seo-jun looked back at him without moving at all.
The soup came.
Ye-rin ate none of it.
Under the cloth Seo-jun's hand found her wrist and then her palm, and held it.
It was not in the act and not in the terms.
It was only warm.
"Today is the seventh day," he said in her ear.
"I know."
"If you want to stop it, tell me now," he said.
"Stop what?" she asked.
"The lawyer's letter. The police report." He did not look at her. "I can make it go away quietly, and nobody ever has to see anything."
"I don't want it quiet," said Ye-rin.
"Good," said Seo-jun. "Neither do I."
The chair of the foundation, a gray, polite man, rose to give the opening remarks.
He talked about scholarships and a hospital wing.
When he sat down, Seo-jun stood, buttoned his jacket and walked to the lectern.
Ye-rin felt Madam Gu's head turn.
"Thank you," he said. "I'll take one minute of your time. I have a personal matter, and the Ryu family has always been honest about its personal matters with this room."
A ripple of amusement went through the tables.
