Chapter 4: The Penthouse
Seo-jun's penthouse in Hannam-dong had a front door that opened with a thumbprint, and a hall with nothing on the walls.
Ye-rin stood in it on Monday evening with one duffel bag and a rice cooker her mother had made her take.
"Your room is the second on the left," Seo-jun said. "The kitchen is yours. I don't use it."
"You don't use a kitchen that size?"
"I use the coffee machine."
He took off his jacket and hung it on a hook by the door.
She saw that he had been waiting to say something and was now choosing how.
"House rules," he said.
"Of course there are."
"The staff here report to the chairman. Anyone who comes in a door can be asked questions later. In front of them, you are mine and I am yours, and you may touch me as much as the part needs," said Seo-jun.
"And in private?"
"In private nobody touches anybody," said Seo-jun, "unless one of us breaks it."
She looked at his face, which had no expression on it at all.
"That suits me," she said.
"Good. The second rule is the room at the end of the hall."
She followed his glance.
A plain dark door stood at the far end, with a brass lock below the handle.
"Don't open it," he said.
"What's in it?"
"Something I don't talk about."
"Fine," said Ye-rin, and she meant to forget it by morning.
Her room had a bed wider than her mother's whole kitchen.
She sat on it for a while, listening to the building hum.
Her mother's whisper from the kitchen would not leave her: I know whose eyes those are.
On the nightstand lay the envelope from Madam Gu that she had carried since Sunday.
She opened it, because she had decided she would.
It was one sheet in Gu's thin upright hand.
It said that Baek Sun-hee had been treated with less courtesy than she was due, and that Madam Gu regretted it.
