Chapter 19: The Trust
The cage jolted to a stop at the top floor.
My father reached for the gate.
I put my hand on the lever before he could pull it.
"Who signed it?" I said.
"Let go of the lever, Iris."
"The trust had two trustees until I turned twenty-five. You and Berenice. Who signed?"
He looked at my hand, then at me.
"Your aunt drew it," he said. "I told her to. She did it in an afternoon."
"And Marigold?"
"Marigold was eighteen. She signed where we showed her."
He pulled my hand off the lever, not roughly.
The gate rattled open.
"Ask your aunt how fast she did it," he said, and walked out onto his floor.
Berenice didn't return a call, a letter or an email for five weeks.
So on Labor Day I went where she'd be.
Marigold's end-of-summer party had been on the Briarwood lawn every year since she was twenty-one.
This year it was her lawn.
