Chapter 24: Midnight Vote
"Then come and vote," I said to my aunt. "In the room. Where he can see your face."
She didn't answer.
I left her sitting at her blotter with the kettle screaming and her phone face down.
On the sidewalk I called the widow.
"Midnight," she said. "He knows I'm in bed by ten."
At five to twelve, Briarwood's library was lit.
My father sat behind his desk under the moose head my grandfather had shot in Maine.
Marigold was curled in the leather chair by the fire in a cashmere wrap, her phone in her lap, her feet tucked up.
The banker and the retired judge stood by the drinks cart in their weekend clothes.
Beside my father's desk sat Clive's old senior partner, with his very good watch and a blue-backed deed squared on the blotter.
He saw Clive come in behind me and lost his smile for a second.
"Mr. Mercer."
"Evening. You're up late for a dollar."
Odessa came in eating licorice. The widow came in after her, in a camel coat with a pink nightgown hem showing at the knee.
"Gerald," she said. "You've made me miss my programs."
The housekeeper brought coffee and squeezed my shoulder on her way out.
