Chapter 19: Again

Raven came back to Greywater after dark, with mud to his knees and an old man's cart following him down the drive.

Two Rydes riders took the cart away toward Hollowbrook.

Raven did not explain.

He walked into the house past the servants, past the great hall, past Linda on the stairs with her gloved hand on the rail, and did not stop until he reached the library.

Max was there, in the lamplight, pretending to read.

Raven shut the door.

He took his black book out of his coat, opened it to a clean page, and wrote.

Then he tore the page out and held it across the table.

Max took it.

It said, in square dark letters: Again.

And under it: Same place. Harder.

Max read it twice.

"You didn't write anything else," he said. "From the hills."

Raven shook his head.

"You're keeping it back."

A short nod.

"Will you tell me?"

Raven looked at him.

His green eyes were red-rimmed from the road, and there was something in them that had not been there before, wide open and unguarded.

He crossed the room, took the page from Max's hand, and set it on the table.

Then he went down on his knees.

"Raven."

He put his forehead against Max's stomach.

His arms came around Max's hips and held on hard, and he stayed there without moving.

Max laid a hand on his dark auburn hair, and it was damp from the rain.

"All right," Max said softly. "All right. Whatever it is. All right."

He felt Raven shudder once.

Then Raven lifted his head.

His eyes had gone dark and bright and fierce, and his hands were at Max's belt.

"Night," Max said, and his voice shook. "Domain."

The change took him in the chest and he gasped.

Raven breathed in, deep, and his scent turned soft.

He did not wait to be told.

He undid Max's trousers, drew out his cock, thick and hard and heavy, and took it into his mouth.

It was the first time he had ever done it, and it showed.
