Chapter 23: The River Story
The Meeting Hall of Hollowbrook held six hundred wolves, and at the ninth bell every bench was full.
Max sat in the omega's seat on the Greywater dais, in black gloves, with his hands folded in his lap.
James sat on his right.
Joel stood behind his left shoulder with his arms crossed.
Raven leaned on the pillar at the end of the dais, the black book shut.
Across the floor, Mary sat among the elders with her kind face composed.
Linda rose.
She walked to the center of the hall in a pale blue gown with her gloves up to the elbow, and the whole room went quiet for her.
"I don't like to tell this," she said.
Her voice shook, just enough.
"I was twelve. It was raining so hard that the river came over the weir and flooded the garden. I was in the garden, and I heard the boys screaming."
A sound went along the benches.
"There were three of them, in the water. Far out. I ran to the boathouse and found a coil of blue silk cord. I tied it round my waist, and I threw it."
She pressed a hand to her heart.
"I pulled with both hands until I could not feel them. I do not remember anything else. When I woke, I was sitting in the mud, and the boys were alive."
Weeping broke out among the Helix aunts.
Even some of the Tyros wolves looked at their boots.
"I have never wanted thanks," said Linda. "I only want everyone to be safe. And I would not say any of this now, except that someone is poisoning the primes against my family. Someone with a scent."
Her eyes slid to Max.
"I would ask the elders to remember who saved them."
She curtsied and went back to her seat, and the applause was thunder.
Max did not clap.
He sat with his hands in his lap and felt six hundred pairs of eyes arrive, one at a time.
