Chapter 6: Bait
On Monday night, at ten past eleven, Dalton rang my doorbell holding a bunch of gas station roses.
I looked at him through the peephole for a while.
Then I opened the door on the chain.
"Nat." He held the roses up. "Can I come in? Five minutes."
"You can say it from there."
His smile twitched and went away.
"Okay. I'm sorry you were upset."
"You're sorry I was upset."
"I'm sorry it got out of hand. Amber didn't mean for it to go that far."
"You paid for it to go that far," I said. "Forty-one thousand, five hundred dollars' worth."
"It's money, Nat. Not a crime."
"You tilted your head at the guards."
His eyes slid sideways.
"You were about to wreck her night, and you'd have regretted it."
"They put my arm behind my back, Dalton."
"They were supposed to walk you out, not hurt you. I told them not to hurt you."
"You told them to take me out of my own house."
He rubbed his face with his free hand.
When he spoke again his voice had gone low and raw, and for a moment I almost recognized the man I used to know.
"You don't understand what Amber is to me. When my dad's care got too expensive, her family covered it. The whole last year, Nat. I can't just tell her no."
"So you told me no instead."
He didn't answer.
"Open the chain," he said. "Please. Let me hold you for one second and then I'll go."
I almost laughed.
"Go home, Dalton."
"I don't have a home. You changed the locks."
"I changed one lock."
