Chapter 15: Nobody's Guest

My old room is at the end of the hall, under the slope of the roof, with a bed that was made for one.

The quilt on it was my grandmother's.

The curtains still had the faded sailboats my mother picked out when I was nine.

Theo had to duck under the beam by the door.

He looked at the narrow bed, and at the shelf of swimming ribbons, and at me.

"This is it," he said. "Five years."

"This is it."

"I thought it would feel bigger."

I shut the door and turned the lock.

It clicked louder than I wanted, and we both froze and listened.

Downstairs, a chair scraped in the study.

Then nothing.

"Why?" I said, very low. "You never told me why."

He sat on the edge of the bed, and the springs complained.

"The first Christmas," he said. "Your father walked me to the front door, with his hand on my back, and said, Theodore, you'll always be welcome in this house as a guest."

"He said that?"

"He said it warmly." Theo rubbed his jaw. "I thought, a guest leaves in the morning. So I decided I'd only sleep here as something else."

"A husband."

"A husband. Nobody's guest."

I stood in front of him and took his face in my hands.

"Then you're home," I said.

He looked up at me for a long moment, and his hands came to my hips.

"Mrs. Bancroft," he said, "you're going to have to be quiet."

"Am I?"

"Your father is thirty feet below us."

"Then you'd better make me."

His eyes went dark.

He pulled me down onto his lap, and I straddled him with my knees on either side of his thighs, and he kissed me.

It was a slow kiss, deliberate, and it made my whole body tighten.
