Chapter 22: Grandma's Turn
My father sat down.
He did it slowly, in the nearest chair, with his folded paper still in his hand.
Grandma walked up the aisle between the tables.
She leaned on her cane, and nobody coughed, and nobody moved a plate.
At the podium she turned around and looked at two hundred people she had known since before most of them were born.
"I am eighty-four years old," she said. "I'll say this once, and then I would like some ham."
A few people laughed, softly.
"Five years ago I said a word at a rehearsal dinner. I said it from my chair, to my granddaughter, while she held a glass of cider."
She looked at me.
"Ruth asked me to. She came to my room and cried. She said, just one more year, I'm not ready to lose her to that island. And I loved Ruth, so I said it."
My throat closed.
"I took no money. That is not a thing to be proud of. I was a coward for free."
"Grandma," I whispered.
"Hush, Delia. I'm not finished."
She turned back to the room.
"That's my veto, and I've spent it, and I am ashamed of it before you all. Now I'll tell you what my son has not."
She held out her hand.
The pastor's wife came forward from the head table with a sheet of paper.
It was a second page, and the staple at the corner was bent.
"The doctor in Portland telephoned me on Friday," Grandma said. "He had read in the paper that there might be a dispute. He's an honest man. He sent me the full letter."
She held it up.
"Walter read you the first page. He did not read you the last line."
"Mother," my father said.
"Pastor, would you?"
The pastor took it.
