Chapter 14: Her Mother's Hand
I opened my mother's letter the night before the reading, alone, on the edge of the bed in the Street of Lamps.
I broke the black wax with my thumb.
It was three pages in a small upright hand.
"My Ximena," it began. "If you are reading this, you are in trouble, and your father is the cause."
I laughed, and then I put my fist against my mouth.
I read it twice.
She had written it the winter she died.
She said she had married a man she did not love for a mine she did love.
She had not been wrong about the mine.
She said Orange Hill silver was the only honest thing in the Ardaval name.
She had taken it out of her husband's hands by law, in a notary's office, in secret.
Now it could never be sold from under her daughter.
She said she was sorry she would not see me grown.
At the end, on the last page, she wrote:
"They will tell you to be smaller," she wrote. "Your father already does, and the court will."
"You come from a line of women who have never been small. Eat at the table. Take up the chair."
