Ximena's POV
The watchman's bell struck twice.
Three times.
In the window glass, over the Street of Lamps, a line of pale gold letters burned.
[RETURN: ACCEPT?]
[Tonight, one time only. Nine strokes remain.]
I looked at the letters.
Then I looked at the man behind me.
He had not said stay.
He stood with his hands open at his sides and his face quite still, bleeding where nobody could see.
Four.
Five.
I thought about my sister, who would be asleep in a flat in Leeds with her phone on her chest.
I thought about my little desk and the hospital's fluorescent lights.
I thought about a thousand claims a week from people whose lives had gone wrong in ways they didn't understand.
I thought about my own body, in my own world.
I had been a size 22 there, too.
A man at the bus stop had once said, quite pleasantly, that it was brave of me to wear a skirt.
