Chapter 21: The Ring
The man in the suit walked back up the gravel to his car.
Seth stood there barefoot with the papers.
"Thirty days," he said.
"Twenty-nine and a half."
Through the shed doors, Wind Rose stood on her cradle with her mast up and her cockpit half built.
"How fast can we finish her?" I said.
"If nothing goes wrong? Four weeks."
"Then nothing goes wrong."
Gran called the old sailor at eight, and he shouted so loud we all heard.
He'd take Wind Rose the minute she floated, any day before the second, and pay on the spot.
"And tell that Wakefield girl," he roared, "that she'd better be perfect!"
"She heard you," Gran said, and hung up.
We worked.
The old shipwrights came at seven instead of eight, and said nothing about it.
On Wednesday the black phone rang again.
Gran handed it to me with a strange look.
"It's your mother."
I hadn't heard my mother's voice since the hall on Bellevue Avenue.
"Charlotte."
"Hi, Mom."
"Arabella's shower is on Saturday. At the club. Two o'clock."
"She'd like you to come. For the photographs. People have been saying such dreadful things, and it would help, darling, if they saw the two of you together."
