Chapter 13: What the Queen Saw
Soyul couldn't feel her hands.
"No," she said.
"Yes."
"He carried the box in from the gate. That's all he did."
"That's all they needed." Yeonseo's voice was flat and quiet.
"A guard who carried the queen's box to a dead consort. The Councillor's clerk swore he saw him open it."
The clerk with the jade cicada.
"I saw the clerk take that box from my own tea room," Yeonseo said.
"The night before. I saw the cicada on his belt. I knew what it meant."
"And you said nothing."
"I said nothing."
The snow thumped off the roof again.
"They did it at dawn," she said, "in the snow-yard under the Gate of Rising Sun."
"My window looked down on it. The whole court came out to watch."
"Stop."
"He didn't beg." Yeonseo was looking at the go board, not at Soyul.
"He asked the officer if they had buried you yet. The officer said no. He said, then put me near her."
Soyul made a sound she didn't know she could make.
