Chapter 15: The Penthouse
The doorman at Cressida's tower sent me up without checking my name.
The penthouse elevator opened straight into her living room.
Eight women sat on white sofas with champagne, and every one of them had laughed at me on Friday.
Cressida stood in the middle in a white dress, with a phone propped on a tripod behind her.
A red light glowed on it.
"There she is," Cressida said. "Look, everyone. She came alone. She actually came."
"You told me to," I said.
"Put your bag down. Pagani key on the table, please."
"No."
"Then kneel," said the woman who had dropped the napkin at my feet. "And say you made it all up."
I looked at her.
"You gave me a napkin and told me to clean up," I said. "The bottle cost more than my rent. I remember."
She flushed.
"I'm here to say one thing to all of you," I said. "Then you can decide who's sorry."
"The stream is live," Cressida said sweetly. "Go on."
I turned my back on the camera, so the women on the sofas were the only people I spoke to.
"Posey Dunne showed a room full of people eighteen names," I said. "Each one is a girl Cressida placed with a married man. She took ten percent of every allowance. Three years."
"A lie," Cressida said.
"I'm not asking you to believe me. I'm asking whether you ever wondered why the new girls always had trouble paying rent."
Nobody answered.
"You," I said to the woman in yellow. "She introduced you to a man at the Carlyle last spring. A friend of her patron's."
The woman in yellow lowered her glass.
"He was only a friend," she said. "He bought me dinner."
