Chapter 6: Plus Three

Posey Dunne found me on Saturday afternoon in the laundromat under my apartment.

She was carrying a duffel bag, and she had not slept either.

"I didn't know where else to go," she said. "The floor captain at the club gave me your address."

I took her upstairs, because the dryers were too loud for a secret.

The three men had gone to change for the gala, and my apartment was almost quiet for the first time in two days.

Posey sat on the edge of my sofa and held her phone in both hands.

"Cressida picked me up at a bar last month," she said. "She said I had the face for it. She said I'd never have to wait tables again."

"For what?"

"For the man in the photo. The one she showed you." Her chin shook. "He pays my rent. Cressida takes ten percent of everything he gives me. Tonight she's making me go to the gala with him, in the blue dress he likes."

I sat down beside her.

"Do you want to go?"

"No."

"Then why would you?"

"Because I owe her four months of rent," Posey said. "And she told me what happens to girls who say no. She said she ruined one girl who refused, and nobody in the city would hire her after."

She turned the phone over in her hand.

"I kept her texts. The prices. All of it. I didn't know who to show."

"Show me tonight," I said. "Not here. In front of the people who matter."

"If she finds out it was me, she'll end me."
