Chapter 7: The Ten Percent

I crossed the ballroom without telling anyone I was going.

"Posey," I said. "Do you want his hand there?"

She shook her head, very slightly.

"Then take it off her," I said to the man, loud enough for the nearest table.

He lifted his hand away.

"I don't believe we've met," he said.

"You know my friend's rent," I said. "And you know the ten percent."

His face went from pink to gray.

Behind me, a champagne glass chimed against a fork.

Cressida was walking toward us with a man in a tuxedo on her arm, the owner of the Pagani, and she was smiling at the whole room.

"Everyone," she said. "I'm so sorry to ruin the evening, but I can't pretend anymore."

Heads turned at every table.

"On Friday this woman attacked me at a private dinner," she said, and her voice broke on the word *attacked.* "She forged deeds to a house and an island. She hired three actors to pose as billionaires, and tonight she's brought them here to humiliate me."

She laid a trembling hand on her heart.

"I never touched her," she said. "I swear it."

The room murmured, and half of it looked at the three men behind me.

"Those are the real Christian Aldous and Dorian Faulk," someone said in a stage whisper.

"Then why would they be with her?" someone else answered.

The man beside Cressida lifted his chin.

"My lawyers will file in the morning," he said. "Ms. Prescott will give back my car."

"I'd like to say something, then," I said.

Cressida smiled wider.

"Of course. Confess."

I looked back at Dorian.
