Chapter 12: The Date on the Page
Emmy's POV
Luther told me what Christian had said, standing in the kitchen doorway at nine in the morning with his coffee untouched.
"He said you signed it with a pen and you were clear. He said to ask you when."
"I didn't sign it."
"I believe you," Luther said. "I only thought you'd want to hear his exact words."
Shanna had come off her night shift and was still in her scrubs.
She took the galley from the table and turned to the permission page.
"There's a date under the signature," she said. "Small gray type, bottom right."
"What does it say?"
She held it close.
"March eleventh."
I did not understand why my hands had gone cold.
"That's the surgery," I said. "That's the day of the D&C."
"Em, it's more than the day." Shanna pressed her thumb to a line I had skipped. "There's a time. It says nine-fifteen p.m."
"I was in recovery by then."
"You were in a bed on the fourth floor," she said. "I know, because I was in the chair next to it, and I was there until ten."
"Then you saw."
"I saw him come in at nine with a clipboard, and I saw him put a pen in your hand."
She stopped.
The color had gone out of her face again.
"Shanna."
"I thought it was a form for the nurses," she said. "I was exhausted. You were looking at the wall, and he said it was a discharge paper. He closed your fingers around the pen. I said, should she be signing that, and he said it was only a formality."
