Chapter 13: What Daphne Signed

My mother's blue sedan was in my driveway before I had finished the second page.

I sat on the porch swing with the lawsuit on my knees and watched her park straight this time.

She came up the walk with a thick packet under her arm and her reading glasses already on.

She did not say good morning.

"Did you get one of these?" she asked.

"Daphne Abbott, Plaintiff," I said. "Yes. A man handed it to me ten minutes ago."

"Mine came to my door last night. Preston's lawyer's office left it, and a note that I'm a witness."

"A witness to what?"

"To what you did to her." She sat on the far end of the swing, with her bag in her lap. "I've read it four times. I came to hear you say it isn't true."

I zipped my coat over Tucker's flannel shirt and held out my hand.

She gave me her copy, and I turned to the page she had folded down.

It said Daphne had lived in my house for the past six months as a member of Preston Lyle's household.

It said I had known, and I had agreed, and I had then thrown her out without notice, while she was five months pregnant.

It asked for money, and for a court order letting her back inside by the end of the month.

"Mom," I said. "Read paragraph six out loud."

"I know what it says."

"Humor me."

She took the page back, and she read it in a flat voice.
