Chapter 15: The Day He Waited

"Let go of me," Tucker said gently, "or I'll stay here all night."

I did not let go.

His blood was off my fingers, and the tap was still running, and I heard myself say something I had meant to keep.

"You knew on Wednesday."

His hand went still in mine.

"I knew the clip existed on Wednesday night," he said. "I told you Friday morning."

"I cooked dinner for them on Thursday."

I turned off the tap.

"I made pot roast, and I set three places, and I sat across from my sister while she passed me the salt. You had the video in your pocket the whole time. I could have thrown them out a night earlier."

"Yes."

"That's all you're going to say?"

"I watched it four times before I let myself believe it," he said. "We had never talked about anything but hedges. I thought if I read it wrong, I'd end your marriage over a taxi and a bad angle."

"And if you read it right?"

"Then I made you eat one more dinner with them, and I'm sorry for every bite."

He did not defend himself, and he did not look away.

I had a speech ready, and every word of it went out of my head.

"I forgave you in your kitchen," I said. "I meant it. I just needed to say it to your face."

"Say it again if you want. I'll hold still."

"I don't want you to hold still."

I took his shirt in both fists and kissed him.

It was not gentle.

He made a rough sound against my mouth and picked me up by the waist, and the edge of my grandmother's table hit the back of my thighs.

I set him back and pulled off my sweater myself.

"Brianna."
