Chapter 16: The Man in the Driveway

Tucker's POV

I came down Brianna's front steps at six in the morning with my boots in my hand, and her mother was filming me.

Joan Abbott had her coat buttoned to the throat and her phone held steady at chest height.

She was not a woman who shook.

"Good morning, Mrs. Abbott," I said.

"Say your name for the camera."

"Tucker Renner. I live at the house on the left. You can see it from where you're standing."

"And where were you last night?"

"Inside your daughter's house, from nine until now."

I sat on the bottom step and pulled on my boots, because I did not want to say the next part with one foot bare.

She lowered the phone an inch.

"Preston told me," she said. "I told him he was a liar."

"He wasn't, this time."

"You're twice her age."

"I'm thirty-six, and she's thirty-one." I tied the left lace. "I'd have said the same to your face yesterday, if you'd asked me."

"A week after her husband left."

"Her husband was in her guest bed with her sister two weeks ago. He had been lying to her for years before that."

Her mouth went thin.

"Don't tell me what my daughter's marriage was."

"I'm not. I'm telling you what I saw from my kitchen window."

She said nothing, and so I kept my voice low and went on.

"Fourteen months ago I came off a night shift at seven in the morning, and her car was parked in her own driveway with the engine off."

Joan's hand tightened on the phone, and she let me go on.

"She was sitting in it with both hands on the wheel," I said. "I made coffee and I watched her from the window, and she didn't move. It was cold. I thought she might be ill."
