Chapter 23: Done

Brianna's POV

Preston stopped an arm's length from my chair.

His right hand was wrapped to the wrist, and his left was holding a creased envelope.

He looked ten years older than he had at the shower.

"I signed them in the car," he said. "Before the window. Your lawyer's draft, every page."

I did not take it.

"The quitclaim claim is withdrawn," he said. "The eighteen thousand four hundred goes back to your account on Monday, and there's no contest on the divorce. I don't want the house. I never should have wanted it."

"Why now?"

"Because I have nothing left to protect." His mouth twisted. "Joan won't speak to me. The warehouse dropped me. My lawyer sent a bill on his way out."

I took the envelope.

It was the first thing he had given me in eight years that I had not had to pay for.

"Go home, Preston," I said.

"I don't have one."

"Then find one. It's not my job anymore."

He nodded at the floor.

He turned and walked out through the sliding doors, into the gray before the morning, and he did not look back.

I sat there holding two cold coffees and an envelope.

Tucker came and stood in front of me in his scrubs.

"That's it," I said. "It's done."

"It's done."

"Then my rules are done."

"Your rules," he said gently, "said until you're finished."

"I'm finished."

He held out his hand, palm up, and I put the envelope on the chair and my hand in his.

At seven he clocked out, and I drove us home with the heater running and his hand on my knee.
