Chapter 5: Incorrect Code

Preston's hand stayed over the keypad for a second.

Then he looked at the black bags beside the door, and at the camera above it.

"Brianna," he said. "Open the door."

I pressed the intercom.

"Your things are on the porch," I said. "Take them with you."

"What the hell are you doing?"

He knocked once, hard, with his knuckles.

"You threw out my whole life because of a bad dinner?"

Daphne scrambled up beside him with her coat clutched to her chest, and she leaned toward the lens.

"Cor, if you didn't want me here, you could have just said so," she cried. "You helped me pick out half of these clothes. You were the one who told me to stay as long as I needed."

"I did say that," I said.

"So how can you do this to me? I'm carrying a baby."

Her voice carried down the street.

Two doors down, a woman I knew only as the one with the corgi had stopped walking.

A man at the end of the block had put down his hedge trimmer.

Tucker stood on his own lawn with his arms folded, and he was not pretending to do anything else.

I switched off the intercom, took a folder from the hall table, and opened the front door.

I stepped out onto the porch and pulled the door shut behind me.

Preston moved to get past me, and I put my back against the wood.

"You can't come in," I said. "This is my house."

"It's our house."

"It was my grandmother's house. It has been in my name alone since before I met you."

I held out the folder.
