Three Days After I Took In My Pregnant Sister, I Caught Her Sleeping With My Husband novel · Chapter 6 of 24

Chapter 6: Mother Takes Sides

My mother got out of the car with her coat half on and her reading glasses swinging from their chain.

She did not look at me.

She went straight to Daphne, took her face in both hands and checked her over for damage.

"Baby, are you hurt? Is the baby all right?"

"I don't know, Mom," Daphne sobbed. "My stomach hurts. She threw all my things out like I was nothing."

My mother turned around.

I had seen that look on her face when I was nine and had lost Daphne at the county fair for ten minutes.

"What is the matter with you?" she said. "You put your pregnant sister out on the street?"

"Mom, I need you to listen to me first."

"I got a phone call in the car from a man who was shaking. Preston said you've been unwell."

I looked at Preston.

He stood with his hands loose at his sides, and his face was full of tired patience.

"Unwell how?" I said.

"He said you've been hard to live with since the treatments," she said. "He said you cry, and you accuse him of things, and you've started imagining problems."

"He told you that?"

"He's been so patient with you, Brianna. For three years. Do you know how many men would have left?"

I had been given shots in the stomach every night for three years, and I had sat through every procedure and every consult by myself.

Preston had never been in the room for one of them.

"Mom," I said, "your daughter was in my guest bed with my husband yesterday afternoon."

My mother's hand flew up, and I thought she was about to cover her mouth.

Instead she put it flat over Daphne's ear.
