Chapter 9: The Overlook
We did not talk about the bread.
At half past three on Sunday he drove us up a logging road above Crystal Lake.
A quilt was rolled between us on the seat.
The maples had turned all at once that week.
They stood on both sides of the track, red and orange and a yellow so bright it hurt.
The leaves came down on the windshield when the wind moved.
He parked on a flat shoulder where the trees fell away.
Below us the lake lay long and blue, with the hills around it red and gold.
"Out," I said, and we got out.
He dropped the tailgate and spread the quilt over the truck bed, a heavy old patchwork with a hole worn in one corner.
The metal rang under it.
Far down the slope a group of hikers was working along the lake trail.
I could hear them, thin and cheerful, calling to each other in the crisp air.
"They can't see us," he said.
"They can hear us."
"Then we'll have to be quiet."
"You will," I said. "I won't."
I took his face in both hands and kissed him, hard, against the side of the truck.
He tasted of cold air and coffee.
I walked him backward until the tailgate hit the back of his thighs, and I pushed on his shoulders.
"Sit."
He sat on the edge of the tailgate with his boots dangling.
I knelt on the quilt in front of him.
"Maura."
"Hands behind you. Flat on the quilt."
He leaned back on his palms.
I unbuckled his belt and opened his jeans, and pulled them down to his knees, and the cold air made him gasp.
He was already hard.
I held him in my hand and looked up at him.
He was looking down at me with his lips parted and his head tipped back against the sky.
