Chapter 10: The Full Clip
The boardroom on the fourteenth floor had a glass wall onto the hall, and every employee who passed found a reason to slow down.
Seven directors sat around the long table.
At the head sat the chairman, a gray man with a gray pen, who had texted Wade at midnight.
Paige sat at the foot, in a cream suit I had never seen, with her hands folded.
She smiled at me when I came in.
It was the same smile she wore every time she took something of mine.
Wade took the empty chair beside mine and said nothing.
"Ms. Fenwick," the chairman said. "Thank you for coming. Ms. Keene has brought a serious complaint."
"I'm only here as a friend," Paige said gently. "I didn't want to cause trouble. But when someone attacks me in my own home and then takes a position with a company I care about, I have to speak up."
"A company you care about?" I said.
"I have a family connection," Paige said, and glanced at Wade. "Through my husband."
A director coughed.
"Your husband is?" the chairman asked.
"Grant Sutter. Mr. Easterling's brother."
The room went very quiet.
Wade did not move a muscle.
"We understand," the chairman said slowly, "that the Easterling family has been estranged."
"Which is why I'm worried," Paige said. "Delia took this job to get close to the family. She moved in on Mr. Easterling the moment she arrived. I've seen the way she looks at him."
She turned her phone around and played the video.
My hand on her collar.
My face.
The caption.
When it ended, she dabbed at her eye with one knuckle.
"I'm not asking for punishment," she said. "I only think a woman who does that, and sleeps with her employer..."
"Ms. Keene," Wade said.
It was the first thing he had said.
"Are you accusing my employee of something I should know about?"
"I'm saying it looks like a conflict of interest," Paige said sweetly.
