Chapter 24: The Blue Crane
At six in the morning on Saturday, October 10, Ha-yeon unlocked the front doors of the Blue Crane Bathhouse.
Her father had opened at six every week of her childhood, and she meant to do the same.
The first people up the steps were three nurses from Severance Hospital, still in their night-shift shoes.
"Is it true?" one of them asked. "The sauna hall, for the price of a bath?"
"If you've worked all night," Ha-yeon said. "That was the rule."
They went in yawning, and the knitter handed each of them an orange uniform and a towel.
Behind the front counter, Woo-seok was peeling roasted eggs into a basket.
He had a fire service T-shirt on under a Blue Crane apron, and the twins were arguing with him about the price.
"Eight hundred won," said the first twin. "Everywhere in Seoul."
"A thousand," said his brother. "These are famous eggs now."
"They're eggs," Woo-seok said. "Five hundred, and free to firemen."
Ha-yeon came around the counter, took the egg out of his hand, and ate it.
"Free to inspectors," she said.
