Chapter 14: Heresy

Corisande took the warrant from the priest, read it once and folded it into her coat.

"Ryota Kishibe," she said, loud enough for the street. "You'll come with us to the Temple."

Behind Ryota, Gautier filled the doorway.

"He's been in my kitchen all night," Gautier said. "What heresy did he commit between the dishes and the drip bucket?"

"He changed sworn bargains, against the law of the stone." She didn't look at Gautier. "Hold out your hands, Kishibe."

The archer brothers had come out with their bows.

The older one had an arrow on the string, pointed at the ground, and he was shaking.

"Put that away," Ryota told him. "You'll finally hit something, and it'll be a knight."

Somebody in the crowd laughed, and it broke the worst of it.

He held out his hands.

Corisande tied his wrists with a strip of leather, not tight, and her fingers didn't touch his skin once.

"Shame on you, Dame," the candle-seller called from her doorway. "He fed you pancakes."

Corisande's face didn't change.

She walked him up the middle of the Lowmarket street with six knights behind, past every stall he bought cabbage from.
