The Empress of Dayan sat on a kitchen stool in the front court of Anbei Mansion and refused tea.
She wore plain grey, with no pearls, and she had come in a hired carriage with one maid.
The household stood along the walls pretending not to look.
Yuwei bowed to her three times, as the rules required.
"Get up," said the Empress. "I have not come to be bowed at. I have come to see your books."
"My books, Majesty?"
"I read your steward's blue ones last night, after the banquet."
"They are the first honest accounts I have seen in thirty years." She folded her narrow hands.
"The Ministry of Rites has lost eleven thousand taels in four years."
"Nobody can tell me where."
"I would like you to look."
Yuwei almost laughed.
"I'm running a house, Majesty."
"I know. It is why I trust your numbers."
"I could spare Steward Ma for two weeks."
"I asked for you."
"Then I'll come in the spring," said Yuwei, "after the rice is planted. And I'll bring my own tea."
