Chapter 11: Her Closet

The housekeeper opened the front door of the Greenwich house and burst into tears.

"Mrs. Russo. Oh, thank God."

"Just Betsy," I said. "I came for my mother's earrings."

Don stood behind me in the hall, carrying my one small bag.

Behind the housekeeper, three maids and the cook had lined up in the marble foyer, all of them looking relieved.

"Mr. Russo," the housekeeper said, and wiped her eyes. "I didn't know whether to call. Miss Ferraro has been staying in the east wing since the day after the party. She said you approved."

I felt Don go cold beside me.

"I approved nothing."

"She said Mr. Ferraro had arranged it."

"Where is she?"

The housekeeper looked at the ceiling.

"Upstairs. In Mrs. Russo's room."

Don started up the stairs two at a time.

I followed him at my own pace, one hand on the rail.

The door of my old bedroom stood open.

Inside, the closet light was on.

Valeria stood in front of the long mirror, wearing my silk robe.

She had my pale-blue dress held against her shoulders and a suitcase open on the bed behind her.

She turned slowly and saw us both.

"Don," she said brightly. "You're back. I was just airing out the closet. Poor Betsy left in such a hurry."

"Take off the robe," Don said.

"Darling, she isn't using it."

"Take it off."

She laughed, then saw nobody else was laughing.

The staff had come up behind us. Three maids and the cook filled the doorway, and none of them were hiding that they were listening.

"I have a key," Valeria said. "You gave it to me years ago."

"I gave it to you to water the plants when I was in Tokyo. For one week. Six years ago."
