Chapter 17: Six O'Clock

At ten to six on Friday, I walked into the Hotel Marchese in my scrubs and my old parka.

I'd come straight from a twelve-hour shift. There was a smear of something I didn't want to think about on my left sleeve.

The lobby was packed.

Two news vans were double-parked on Fifth Avenue. Inside, cameras on tripods made a half circle around a little podium set up on the marble, right under the brass chandelier.

Right where my bag had been dumped.

Grayson stood behind the podium in a new gray suit with his lawyer at his elbow.

His left hand had healed. There was a thin pink line across the palm where my three stitches had been.

He saw me come through the revolving door and smiled.

It was the smile from the rooftop. Sad and brave.

"Dr. Marchese," he said into the microphones. "I'm glad you came. You deserve to hear this."

"I'm sure I do," I said.

I didn't go to him. I went and stood by the security desk, next to the bigger guard.

He'd gotten a haircut. He looked like he was about to take an exam.

"You okay?" I asked him.

"No, ma'am."

"Me neither. Breathe."

At six exactly, Grayson cleared his throat.

"Four weeks ago," he said, "in this lobby, a woman I once loved was humiliated. I was part of that, and I'm ashamed of it. But what happened afterward was worse."
