Chapter 18: Mine First

Rocco stopped running.

He stood on the marble with Steve the T-rex dangling from one hand and looked up at the man in handcuffs.

He frowned the frown he used on broccoli.

"No," he said. "She's my mama. I was in her tummy."

The press line made a sound.

Giancarlo reached us in three steps and swung Rocco up onto his hip.

He looked at Grayson for a moment.

Then he turned his back on him.

"Doc," he said to me. "We have cake upstairs."

"Okay."

Behind us the detective pushed Grayson toward the revolving door. I didn't watch him go.

Rocco waited until bedtime.

He always saved his worst questions for eight o'clock.

Teeth brushed, light off, and then he fired them.

I was lying on his bed with him, my feet hanging off the end.

Giancarlo sat on the floor with his back against the wall, because Rocco had asked him to stay.

"Mama."

"Yes, baby."

"What does mine first mean?"

I looked up at the glow-in-the-dark stars on his ceiling.

"It means a long time ago, before Daddy, I had a boyfriend. And that man was him."

"The red man?"

"The red man."

He thought about it.

"Did you love him?"

Giancarlo didn't move on the floor. I could feel him not moving.

"I thought I did," I said. "But he wasn't kind to me. And when somebody isn't kind to you, you stop."
