Chapter 10: The Ticks
Hilde Fossum came to the Hall on Tuesday with her cane and a thermos of tea.
She is sixty-nine, small and upright, with a white bob and red-framed glasses on a chain.
She kept the pack's money for forty years before I did.
She sat down in my chair at the long table in the records room and pulled the main ledger toward her.
"Sit, Alpha," she said.
Cass sat.
"You have six years of this to learn."
"In one afternoon," I said. "It's Tuesday. This is my last day."
"Then he has one."
Hilde turned the ledger around.
"Read me the first column."
He read it.
He read it slowly, with his finger on the line.
I stood at the window with my arms folded and watched the back of his head.
I had thought it would be worse.
I had thought I would hate seeing him on the wrong side of my own work.
