Chapter 13: Five Terms
On my first morning at Chippewa Valley Credit Union, I was given a badge, a stapler and a coffee I did not have to make.
They also gave me a teal silk scarf with the credit union's name printed along one edge.
Every employee wore it knotted at the neck.
I knotted mine and sat down at a desk with a window and a door that closed.
The clock on the wall said five o'clock meant five o'clock.
Nobody asked me where the winter fund was.
Nobody called me before eight.
By noon I had figured out that I was happy, and I did not know where to put it.
I had typed the terms that morning, at six, kneeling on the floor of my flat with the laptop on a moving box.
I had printed them on the little printer that still sat in its carton.
The paper was in a plain envelope in my bag, and it sat there all day.
