Chapter 14: The Flat Above the Hardware Store
Cass stood on the sidewalk in the dark with a grocery bag in one arm and a folding camp stool under the other.
He had changed into a black sweater, and he had shaved a second time.
"You said to bring something to sit on," he said.
"I did."
"The stool is for me. I didn't want to assume the couch."
"I don't have a couch."
"I know. That's why I brought a stool."
I laughed, and I let him in.
He climbed the narrow stairs behind me, and I felt him looking at the back of my skirt the whole way up.
The flat had two rooms and a kitchen the size of a closet.
There was a gas stove with three working burners.
The window over the sink looked at the back of the bank.
A moving box stood in the middle of the floor with a candle burning on it.
Through the open bedroom door he could see the iron bed frame the hardware store had delivered that afternoon, with a mattress and no sheets.
"It's small," he said.
"It's mine."
"I like it."
"Put the bag down."
He put the bag on the counter.
He unpacked a bunch of basil, a bag of onions, a block of cheese, two lemons and a bottle of olive oil.
"Term two," he said. "I'm cooking half."
"Which half?"
"The half that doesn't need a stove."
"Then you can sit."
I filled the big pot at the sink and set it on the burner and lit it.
I found the box of spaghetti and a kitchen timer shaped like a tomato.
"Sit," I said.
He unfolded the camp stool in the narrow space between the stove and the wall.
He sat on it.
It was too low for him, and his knees came up, and he looked enormous in my kitchen.
"The water is nearly boiling," I said. "The pasta takes ten minutes."
