Chapter 20: The Head Table
I smoothed my dress and followed Cass out of the coat room with my face composed and my knees not quite steady.
The hall had gone quiet.
Every table faced the stage, and on the stage Kjersti Vang stood behind the sixth chair with both hands on its back.
She wore a long silver gown.
Three elders sat at the end of the head table, in the Council's black wool.
The oldest of them was speaking.
"The Alpha has not seated anyone," she said. "Under the custom, and the treaty, the Council seats the Vang pick."
"Cass Dahlgren," the elder said. "You are late."
"I'm here," Cass said.
He walked up the center aisle between the long tables.
I walked a pace behind him, and no one looked at me, because they were all looking at him.
He climbed the three steps to the stage, and I climbed after.
Kjersti drew out the chair.
"I'll take my place," she said, to the room, in the voice of a woman reading from a document.
